Beware of Scam Calls!
Scammers try to take advantage of people by calling and demanding payment immediately. They claim to be a representative of your local utility or energy provider. They insist you’re behind on your electricity and threaten the truck is on the way to shut off power.
If you get a call from someone claiming to be your utility company, here are some things you can do:
- Thank the caller and tell them you will contact the utility company directly using the number on your utility bill or the utility website
- If the caller insists you have a past due bill and demands payment - never give banking information over the phone!
- Utility companies don’t demand banking information over the phone or by email.
- Beware of unusual payment methods such as prepaid debit card or wire transfer.
- Tell your friends and loved ones about the scam so they can protect themselves!
