Position Objectives:

General Statement of Duties:  Performs lifeguard work in protecting life and enforcing regulations at the Luverne Area Aquatics and Fitness Center; and performs related duties as required.

 

Supervision Received:  Works under the general and/or technical direction of the Wellness Center Supervisor and/or Senior Shift Supervisor; receives work direction from the Shift Supervisors.

 

Supervision Exercised:  None.

Duties and Responsibilities:

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED

 

The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in this class.  Duties may vary somewhat from position to position within a class.

 

     *    Oversees patrons to ensure their health and safety while in the pool or facility.

     *    Efficiently performs rescue skills.

     *    Administers CPR and First Aid when necessary.

     *    Enforces all facility rules and regulations fairly and firmly.

          Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of the tanning beds, exercise

            equipment, and facility as needed.

          Collects fees and assists in registration of swimming and water safety courses;

            completes records and reports as needed.

          Assists in public relations and promotion activities.

          Handles phone calls, inquiries, and minor complaints from patrons.

          Performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

     *    Considerable knowledge of water safety, lifeguarding and swimming techniques.

     *    Working knowledge of CPR and first aid as it applies to water rescue.

     *    Considerable skill in swimming and lifesaving requiring speed, endurance, and

             proficient techniques.

     *    Considerable ability to see and hear participants, and to be able to carry out

             emergency action procedures, and to administer CPR and First Aid in a pool

             setting.

     *    Considerable ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time and work in

             heated pool area (90 degrees).

     *    Considerable ability to bend, crouch, stoop, stretch or grapple with others if

             needed to save patrons from drowning.

     *    Considerable ability to use large motor skills to swim; rescue a victim; swim     underwater; tow a victim; lift, drag, and carry a victim.

     *    Considerable ability to operate a telephone, hear and understand callers and

             respond orally with appropriate information.

          Working ability to enforce all rules and regulations of the facility.

          Working ability to communicate with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and

             tactful manner.

          Working ability to complete accident reports and miscellaneous records.

          Working ability to operate a cash register and make proper change.

     *    Working ability to maintain the appropriate Red Cross credentials.

Minimum Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Must be certified in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, and Lifeguard Training.

 

Desirable Qualifications:  Prefer lifeguard experience.
